  • I went to school in Wrightsville from 1951 to 1959. I remember going down to the river at lunch time--we had an hour for lunch--and finding little rectangular row boat, that someone had made from some boards, I paddled out under the huge concrete arches of the Wrightsville-Columbia Bridge. Then I went over to the piers of the old railway bridge. As a nine or ten-year-old I was fascinated by these magnificent structures. I was also fascinated with how many other bridges--wooden ones--had stood at this same location before these. It is interesting that this bridge is still the longest concrete arch bridge in the world.
