Opened in 1950 as part of the PA Turnpike's Philadelphia Extension (connecting nearby Carlisle with Valley Forge), the original four-lane bridge (as seen in this outdated imagery) was replaced with this new six-lane bridge that was constructed using pre-fabricated concrete segments in a manner similar to that used on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Bridge (Delaware 1 Turnpike) in St. Georges, Delaware.
