Goat Island, in Old Harbour Bay, was used as a Naval Base. During World War II, numerous submarine maneuvers were run from there. Not surprisingly, residents of Port Morant can recall hearing loud sounds at night. The base was abandoned in 1949. If you happen to fly over Goat Island you can still see some of its remains.

The island is used mainly for goat rearing and recreational activities. A fact that is often overlooked is that the Island is a Protected Area being home to several indigenous plants and birds, it is also believed that the very rare Jamaican Brown Iguana still lives on this island.

The island is is home to a goat herds the introduction of which has caused much environmental damage; the island that is devoid of ground shrubs.
