Atomic Physics Observatory (Washington, D.C.)

Built in 1937-38, this building once housed a molecular physics observaotry created to split atoms. Sheathed by a seventy-ton steel shell, the facility was able to emit up to five million volts of electricity. It was one of the first sites in the United States to produce nuclear fission.
