Former CM Biju Patnaik was the president of the club from 1962 to 1964. Subsequently, the top post was held by chief secretary of the state for many years till 2003 while other members were being nominated. In 2004, the clubs byelaws changed, paving the way for election to all posts, including that of the president. Patnaik was elected as president in 2004 and continues to hold the post.

  • One begs to differ on the point that the Bhubaneswar Club is the hangout for the most stuck up people of Bhubaneswar. To put the records straight Bhubaneswar Club was primarily and foremostly established as a club for serving as well as retired civil servants residing at Bhubaneswar and later on non-government members were inducted after a thourough scrutinising process. Money is quite incidental if one seeks membership of this Club. The main criteria is that one should be a person of repute(though not ill-repute) which by itself eliminates goons and thugs from this place. Only Civil Servants belonging to the Central Services or the All India Services are automatically eligible to apply for membership. The Club is also one of the liveliest Clubs in and around the State. Its throughout the year buzzing with activities. The food at the club is out of this world, really sumptuous, in short, a gastronomic delight.

Bhubaneswar Club is micro-managed by the committee members of the club who take all necessary steps and measure to ensure that not over it satisfies the requirements of the Club's members, but more importantly is a jewel in the crown of Orissa State. It sets an example of how leadership which is strong in purpose, steadfast in will and resolute in action can make it one of the best, if not the best, run club in India. It is sad to learn that such a jewel of Orissa is considered, by few but significant residents of the temple city, to be an abode of pretentious people of Bhubaneswar. The Club, in its micro way shows that with proper management and with the right people at the helm, shows that Orissa, still, has the potential to become the next success story, not only in India but in the World. Every institution has its shortcomings, but the shortcomings, whatever they maybe have not commandeered the decision making process of the Club and sent it on the road to its perdition. If the scrutinising process is considered, by this small but significant people to be owing to its strict vetting process, there is a reason. Adding to Bhubaneswar Info's input the reason is not because it is to create a Bertie Wooster type Drones Club or one of the St James' Clubs in London, but to ensure that infamous and ill-reputed people don't enter the hallow doorways of the Club. This small but significant people(note: the ill-reputed people & not the critique of BBSR Club) would pollute the Club with their obnoxious activity and lead to its depredation. The vetting process also ensures that the Club is used for the proper activities and ensure that, be it, even a Civil Servant who has a bad reputation for its conduct unbecoming of an officer, can have his or her membership cancelled once convicted. The process of eviction/ejection has an adverse profound effect on the person. This punishment is swift and severe and does the job what the law of land(to punish) takes a really long time. Even though not everyone in Bhubaneswar can use its facilities and premises, the club has always helped the society. Year after year it donates money to the CM's Relief corpus as well as donating a significant fraction of its collection(from large celebrations) to charitable organizations. I conclude with a disclaimer that as we live in a liberal democracy, everyone has the right to criticise anything that is in public and the society's interest. Quoting Tony Blair ,when in his last speech in Parliament (as PM) directed towards the Opposition he said "I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight for your right to say it". I, personally, encourage to identify the shortcomings of the solution, but more importantly one should have his/her facts in order before stating it, and moreover, you should provide a solution to the impending problem. On a point of grammar, "MOST stuck up people of Bhubaneswar". Well how do you decide that the MOST stuck up people are found here. Where are the other places where you find stuck up people and whats your criterion or criteria to jump to such a conclusion which has disparaging in nature(if you didn't realise that in the first place)? I, personally, feel you are a foolishly grandiose person.
