Amtrak HOLLY Interlocking

USA / Delaware / Claymont /
 railway, interlocking

This is an example of a poor man's high sped turnout on Amtrak's NEC. In the PRR days the outer tracks were for passenger traffic and the inner tracks were for freight. Amtrak shifted high speed trains to the inner tracks, but due to the old configuration it became necessary to move all passenger traffic to the outer tracks.

To avoid a costly delay to high speed trains switching tracks HOLLY interlocking provides a straight, hi speed route from the inner to the outer tracks with all other routes having to diverge.

HOLLY was constructed during Amtrak's late 1980's improvement program.
