The Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum maintains the largest and most academically substantial independently held collection of rare and out-of-print books, documents, films, music, photographs and memorabilia on African American history and culture in the United States. The Library's primary goal is to make the collection available to the public as a cultural compass to a more complete understanding of African-American history.
Mayme Agnew Clayton, Ph.D. (1923 - 2006) assembled the collection over a 40-year period to ensure that "children would know that black people have done great things."
The Western States Black Research and Education Center was founded in 1981 by Dr. Clayton to collect, preserve; exhibit and disseminate the unique history and cultural heritage of Americans of African descent and allow the expressions of intelligence and creativity and nobility to serve as a cultural compass to a more complete understanding of American history.
