The library survived an infamous arson fire in the early 1980s, culminating in the decision to rebuild and renovate rather than tear down the building. The adjacent US Bank Tower (tallest in Los Angeles) paid for the "air rights" in order to help finance the renovation.

The site originally held the State Normal School, which was the original incarnation of what would later be the University of California, Southern Branch, and finally UCLA.

In 1984 its book stacks and card catalogue doubled for the ones at the New York Public Library in the movie Ghostbusters.
