Primarily residential township named after the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn. The township was incorporated February 23, 1855; many of the residents then were farmers of Scotch-Irish, German, and English descent. Some of the original township land was lost when the areas of Trafford, Penn, Jeannette, and Manor became their own municipalities.
