Established in 1874 as the St. Joseph Life Boat Station of the US LifeSaving Service, USCG Station St. Joseph is presently a year-round station tasked with securing 850 square miles of Lake Michigan.

Operating as part of the US Coast Guard's 9th District, Sector Lake Michigan, the station utilizes a 47ft Motor Life Boat, 25ft Defender Class Boat and a 14ft Ice Skiff to perform 175 search & rescue calls and conducts 350-400 boardings each year in addition to being ice-rescue capable.
