This fortress was built by the french ocupying troops during teh Spanish War of Independence. Its purpose was covering the only road to Santoña then: the Berria isthmus. From this strategic location the batteries reached, apart from the channel and haven of Santoña, the city itself, the road and beach of Berria and the fortifications of El Dueso.
