tunnel, railway tunnel
The New Portage Tunnel was constructed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from 1852 to 1855 as part of the "New" Portage Railroad, which replaced the series of railroads and inclined planes connecting the two parts of the Old Pennsylvania Canal. After being purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1857, the tunnel was removed from service until the 1890s when it was upgraded and incorporated into the PRR's primary route for eastbound traffic.
