Monastery of Zygou (Ruined)

Ruined monastery 40 meters out of Mt Athow Community limits. The oldest refernece to this monastery, which was dedicated to St. Elias the Prophet, can be found in a monuscript dated 942. It was one of the most importand monasteries of Mt. Athos, but it was abandoned in the 12th century (archaeologists have found indications of destruction by fire). The area has been excavated by archaeologists for years. The walls of the monastery decorated with frescoes have ben preserved to a height of 2 to 3 meters.
