Made famous by the circumstances surrounding a case of "contamination of drinking water with hexavalent chromium", also known as chromium (VI), by Pacific, Gas and Electric — PG&E, by Erin Brockovich, who investigated the company and along with Edward L. Masry and filed a class-action suit against the company. The case was settled by PG&E in 1996 for $333 million. Her story became the basis of a 2000 Hollywood film for which actress Julia Roberts won the arcady award for her portrayal of Brockovich.
