According to Bittlestone, Diggle & Underhill, this low-lying marshy area was once the port for the ancient town of Ithaka. Subsequent geological uplift has raised the entire island by several meters, changing the coastline considerably.

The parallel walls toward the northwest end of the area, to the right of the bright quarry, though obviously post-dating ancient times and no doubt built and rebuilt numerous times, might mark the locations of the vanished harbor at various times during the past.
