Part of the land owned on Green Mountain by John Coles II, purchased from Eppes land grant. Named for John I's (John's father) birthplace near Leinster, Ireland.

Estouteville is the third manor house of the same name on this site. Governor Thomas Jefferson fled the British troops in 1781 to Estouteville I (the home of John Coles II, who was the commander of the troops guarding the prisoners of war held at The Barracks).

Estouteville II was built by John's son Isaac (Jefferson's secretary during his second term as president) and his wife Julianna Stricker Rankin.Jefferson's builder William B. Phillips did the brickwork and the house was painted by Burwell, a skilled artisan and slave freed in Jefferson's will. This house burned in 1839.

Julianna built the present house in 1850.
