The eastern slopes of the Fan Mountains are the source of soapstone that was long used by Native Americans and European settlers in the area. This soapstone was commercially exploited starting in 1883, by James Serene when he opened the Alberene Soapstone Company (located in the nearby company town of Alberene). A number of other companies opened in the area, and Schulyer and Esmont also served as company towns.

Mount Oliver is one of the peaks that compose the Fan Mountains. Oliver is the site of the Fan Mountain Observatory of the University of Virginia's Astronomy Department
