place with historical importance, community, ethnic

This is a historically African-American community. Antecdotally, this area is said to be given to freed slaves after the American Civil War. Interviewing people who live in Freetown, they said Freetown is a good place to raise a family. At one time there was some light industry, a food processing company in the area. Today there is a school, community center, parks, and residential homes. Some people who moved away from Freetown during their work years moved back there during their retirement years. The community in recent years has been surrounded with housing developments populated by people from other ethic backgrounds. Many of the homes in Freetown have larger plots of land than are normal for surburban development and thus maintain more of a rural community feeling.
