The Citizen Building was constructed in 1929 by Eugene and Kitty Donovan and originally contained the successful hometown newspaper, The Citizen. Survivors of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the Donovans instructed that the building be constructed according to San Francisco earthquake building codes as Southern California had not yet adopted similar building codes. Some of their accounts included Thomas Ince, Hal Roach, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Selznick, R.K.O. Pathe and DeMille Studios. It remained a family-owned business until the 1990s, when it was sold to Josetta Sbeglia. The building became Historic Site Number 4 in 1984, and in 1987 became the first Culver City landmark placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
