Naperville residents are invited to attend the dedication of the Commander Dan Shanower/September 11 Memorial on Thursday, September 11, 2003, behind the Municipal Center on the south side of the Riverwalk. A musical prelude will begin at 5:15 p.m., with the ceremony following at 5:30 p.m.
The Shanower/September 11 Memorial Commission, which is comprised of people who work or live in Naperville, has coordinated the fundraising, design and development of the memorial. With the help of numerous corporate and private donations including funds, materials and time, the board commissioned a sculptor to design an attractive and poignant memorial to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including Naperville native Commander Dan Shanower.
The memorial will include a 48-foot long Wall of Faces, landscaped garden, an eternal flame, a flagpole and a sculpture incorporating a beam from the World Trade Center, rubble from the Pentagon and granite from the Pennsylvania region where flight 93 crashed.
