In the heights between El Castillo (where nowadays some ruins from fortifications remain) and Guardamino and the road down to Riancho took place the Battle of Ramales during the First Carlist War (first of the civil wars in Spain in the XIXth century). The liberal triumph in that battle opened the roads for the liberal armies towards the Carranza Valley and the heartland of Biscay, while the carlist were prevented from extend the war to the west of Cantabria and Asturias. So, this battle became decissive for the outcome of the war. From this liberal and constitutional victory over the absolutism of the carlist faction took its new name the village of 'Ramales de la Victoria' (spanish for 'of the Victory').
