The Metropolitan Club is a private social club in New York City. It was formed in 1891 by J.P. Morgan, who served as its first president. Other original members of the club included William K. Vanderbilt and James Roosevelt. Its 1912 clubhouse, designed by McKim, Mead & White with interiors by Gilbert Cuel and stained glass by D. Maitland Armstrong (the library alone was by the Herter Brothers), stands at 1-11 East 60th Street, on the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue. The land on which the Clubhouse stands — 100 feet fronting on Fifth Avenue and 200 feet on 60th Street — was acquired from the Duchess of Marlborough who signed the purchase agreement in the United States Consulate in London. Cornelius Vanderbilt signed for the club. Structural elements were fabricated by the Guastavino Fireproof Tile Co.

The lantern in the center of the main hall was transported from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago by White after the temporary pavillion he designed was removed. Murals were executed by Edward E. Simmons and Perili of France. The Metropolitan Club is no longer a male-only club. For more information, guests can call 212.838.7400.
