The General Motors Metal Fabricating Division - Indianapolis Metal Center was a 2.1 million SF automotive plant operated on this 103-acre site from 1930 until 2011.
As of 2018, the site has been considered for redevelopment for a new Indy Eleven soccer stadium, amphitheater, criminal justice center, parking for the Indianapolis Zoo, an extension of White River State Park, a possible site for Amazon's HQ2, and other mixed-use development.
In 2018, Indianapolis-based Ambrose Property Group purchased the site as part of a proposed $1.38 billion redevelopment called Waterside. Ambrose's proposal planned for 1,350 residential units, 620 hotel rooms, 2.75 million SF of office space and 100,000 SF of retail and 12,000 jobs over several years. In September 2019, Ambrose announced that it has canceled Waterside and was seeking to sell the property.
In December 2020, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation purchased the property from Ambrose as part of a deal with Elanco Animal Health to develop the site as the company's new global headquarters. The City of Indianapolis and State of Indiana are offering an incentives package as part of the redevelopment. The district, called Levee, will also include mixed-use housing and commercial office space and an extension of White River State Park.
