Raameswaram is significant for many Indians as a pilgrimage to Benaras is considered by some to be incomplete without a pilgrimage to Rameswaram. The presiding deity here is usually referred to as a Linga with the name Sri Ramanatha Swamy, it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

This masterpiece of Indian architecture boasts of the biggest temple corridor in India. Different rulers built the Ramanathaswamy Temple over a period of time starting from the twelfth century.(Although this theory is devised by westerners which has been proven to be false). The temple comprises twenty two wells where the taste of the water of each well is different from the other. The grandest part of the temple is the 1219 m pillared corridor consisting of 3.6 m high granite pillars, richly carved and well proportioned. The perspective presented by these pillars run uninterruptedly to a length of nearly 230 m.

  • i love it...this temple must be taken a good care
  • This entire temple complex was renovated and additions were made by the Ramanathapuram Sethupathi family for about 300 years. Subsequently, the temple renovation work was handed over by the Ramanathapuram Rulers to the Zamindar of Devakottai. The Devakottai Zamindar AL. AR. Ramaswamy Chettiar's four sons viz., (1) AL. AR. RM. ARUNACHALAM CEHTTIAR; (2) AL. AR. RM. CHOCKALINGAM CHETTIAR; (3) AL. AR. RM. VELLAYAN CHETTIAR; AND (4) AL. AR. RM. NARAYANAN CHETTIAR took care of the day-to-day management of the temple and renovation work simultaneously. They completed the East Raja Gopuram of the Temple, renovated the entire temple by rebuilding the brick and mortar structure into granite structure and performing consecration in 1923. Besides, they had made a lot of gold and silver vaahanaas for the annual festivals and a lot of precious jewelleery.
