This 4,000-foot clay surface landing strip was built by Paramount Studios in early 1942 and used to film scenes for the movie "Wake Island". It was originally not part of the NAF Salton Sea just to the north, but in April 1942 Commander, Patrol Wing ONE advised that it would be an aid in establishing the seaplane base. Scenes from Humphrey Bogart's 1943 movie "Sahara" were filmed just west of this location.
The landing strip was abandoned in 1955 due to the rising levels of the Salton Sea.
