The Diplomatic Academy (DA) of the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs dates as far back as 1934 when an Institute for diplomatic and consular personnel was set up at the People’s Commissariat of Foreign Affairs that was later, in 1939, transformed into a Higher Diplomatic School (HDS). In 1974 in accordance with a resolution of the government HDS was transformed into the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the USSR.

Today the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs is one of major educational centers in the world, most sophisticated in training career diplomats and specialists in international relations.

Special curricula of the DA provide professional retraining and advanced training for employees of federal and regional bodies of state power and government, businesses, non-government structures, foreign specialists who work in the sphere of international relations.

The Faculty of Advanced Training provides a refresher course for diplomats of the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Newly appointed ambassadors, counselors, envoys, consuls general and Russian representatives at international organizations are trained at Higher Diplomatic Courses.

The Faculty of International Relations and the Faculty of the World Economy provide second higher education. The course takes 3 years (day and evening departments).

The DA has post-graduate and doctorate courses.

The Diplomatic Academy offers additional services in education to meet the Customer’s needs (foreign languages, the Russian language for foreigners, a special course “Russia in the Modern World”, language and culture trainings abroad).

The Institute for Contemporary International Studies (ICIS) and departments of the DA do research in different fields of international relations, publish books, monographs, articles, textbooks and teaching aids, “Diplomatic Annual”.

The faculty of the DA (170 people) are highly qualified: among them there are 39 professors and doctors of sciences, 55 associate professors and candidates of sciences (PhD), 48 researches.

46 employees of the DA have diplomatic ranks: among them there are 11 Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, 11 Honored Scientists. Guest-lecturers of the DA are senior officers of the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, well-known politicians, high-ranking foreign officials (presidents, prime-ministers, foreign ministers, ambassadors).

The Diplomatic Academy has modern scientific, technical and information facilities. There are computer classes, satellite television, a reading room, a library with 40000 units of scientific and educational literature in 70 languages.
