This was the former Freeman Army Airfield, which trained B-25 Mitchell bomber crews during World War II. The base was closed in 1948.

Freeman Field was the site of the "Freeman Field Mutiny", one of the major incidents which led to the desegregation of the armed forces.

The base also had a top secret role during the war in testing and evaluation captured Axis aircraft to determine their weaknesses. Numerous reports of German and Japanese aircraft and parts being buried on the base after the war led to several "treasure hunts" over the years, which finally began paying off with rare aircraft part discoveries that are still ongoing.
