Mystery surrounds this late Victorian built sometime before 1905. With the records of the architectural firm of Norman Marsh and Clarence Russell, designers of many of the Venice of America buildings, missing, there is no record of for whom it was built, why it was built, and why the Abbot Kinney Company chose to use such distinctive architectural elements in its construction. What is known is that the first tax record for this address shows a John Fonnell (possibly the same John Fonnell who owned the landmarked home at 1334 Kellam Avenue) paid a $10 gold coin for the property. The Venice of America House is one of the first, and now oldest, residential buildings built by the Abbot Kinney Company.
