interesting place, listed building / architectural heritage, nonresidential building, 1906_construction
This building was constructed in 1905-1906 by the architect I. P. Mashkov on the site of a building built in 1875 by the architect D.N. Chichagov.
In the late 1970s-early 1880s the journal "Budilnik' was published in which A. Chekhov was a frequent a contributor publishing 18 stories. In the 1880s and 90s, the magazine "Russian Thought" was published here.
In 1882 in this house there was a "broadcasting" from the Bolshoi theater. The Society for Water Rescue decided to improve their shaky financial position. They established in an apartment in this house a connection to the Bolshoi theater using one of the members ear-phones and two microphones in the Bolshoi. The payment for listening was 1 ruble for 10 minutes. The first broadcast was Verdi's opera "Rigoletto", then "Faust", "Romeo and Juliette», "Demon", «Life for the Tsar». The novelty was a huge success but in the end the interested persons were taken away. After 12 transmissions it all ended. It should be noted, however, that the communication quality was far from ideal.
In the house there was an apartment of the actor of Moscow Art theater, A.L. Vishnevskov, companion of Chekhov on the Taganrog grammar school. In 1892-1908 in the house there lived the actress of Maly theater, G.N. Fedotova. In 1920-1930 here lived the playwright B.S. Romashov.
Now the building is the location of several banks including a branch of Sberbank.
