An airship base, RNAS Luce, was established at East Freugh during World War I. Dating back to 1936, RAF West Freugh first opened as an Armament Training Camp in 1937. With the arrival of World War II, its facilities were expanded to provide training for observers, navigators, and bomb aimers, with the addition of a bombing range and creation of a Bombing Trial Unit.

The airfield remained operational after the war ended, and a large area of surrounding land, and sea within the bay, now serve as a bombing range, located three miles (5 km) northeast of Sandhead and five miles (8 km) southeast of Stranraer, extending over the foreshore and much of Luce Bay www.qinetiq.com/

The RAF airfield at West Freugh was taken over by QinetiQ in 2001. Work that takes place at the base includes a range of bombing activities and short-range weapons trials. The airfield itself was closed in 2001 when full-time airfield operations ceased at West Freugh.
