A cinder cone, (or ash cone), is a deposit around a volcanic vent, formed by rock fragments or cinders that accumulate and gradually build a conical hill with a bowl-shaped crater at the top.
By studying the extent of erosion and soil development on Lathrop Wells, researchers compared this volcanic cinder cone with a similar cone in southeastern California, indirectly dated at about 15,000 to 20,000 years old.
