Fort McAllister is one of the best preserved Confederate earthen coastal fortifications from the Civil War.

It is also one of the only earthen forts that was able to successfully hold off Union warships throughout the war (Fort Darling/Drewry's Bluff in Richmond is another example.)

However, what the Union forces could not do with ships, they did with men. A body from Sherman's army made a surprise attack from the weakly defended land side and captured the fort in a sharp fight in early 1865.

After the war, most of the heavy ordnance at the fort was dumped into the river. The guns were recently discovered and recovered, and they are slowly being reintroduced to the fort, making it one of the few forts in the south to have its original armament still in place.
