Construction of Fort Darby began in 1815 at the confluence of Bayou Terre aux Boeufs and Lake Lery. It was commissioned by General Andrew Jackson after the British attacked New Orleans and was possibly named after Jacksons topographical engineer William Darby. A sign in Delacroix, Louisiana is the only indication that a fort once stood near that location as no ruins remain.
