The KNSM Eiland is a man-made island in the IJ, the large body of water that runs through Amsterdam. It is named after the 'Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot Maatschappij' (Royal Dutch Steamboat Company), that started to use the island from 1903. Their activities were slowly moved to the western harbours, and in 1977 the KNSM left the island. Artists, squatters and numerous other people swiftly moved in to the area and made the island their home.

In 1988 a plan was developed to make the area a new urban development area, and in the early nineties, the first buildings arose. Some of the original warehouses and other buildings have been restored, but mostly, new developments have been built, with nice fresh architecture
