The Goudriaankanaal is a partially finished canal, running through Waterland between IJdoorn (now Durgerdam) and Marken. The canal formed a strategic connection between Amsterdam and the former Zuiderzee (now the IJsselmeer), since ships would have bypassed the sandbanks near the island of Pampus. Work commenced in 1826, but was already discontinued in 1828. The course of the canal is still clearly visible in Waterland and on Marken.
