Amsterdam City Centre (Amsterdam)

Netherlands / Noord-Holland / Amsterdam
draw only border, historic city center, town district

The capital of the Netherlands has approx. 747.000 inhabitants and its centre is characterized by the canals and canal houses. The City borough Amsterdam Centre has 79.000 inhabitants.
The city is famous for its Red Light District, The Van Gogh Museum, The Anne Frank Museum and of course its coffeeshops, where it is allowed (though officially not legal) to smoke soft drugs. All these places of interest can be found in the centre of the city. Since it is so small most Amsterdam people ride bicycles. They are not too keen on foreigners riding them as well, since riding a bicycle in the city centre asks for special capacities not found in other cities or countries.

  • you got that right
  • Netherlands is the coolest country on Earth and Amsterdam is the coolest city. So much culture, yet so modern; the people are nice and friendly and can speak English too. And so much cool stuff to buy! I don't think that anyone could ever get sick of Amsterdam; it's a city that never sleeps..or even rests!
  • "Not too keen on foreigners riding a bike"? That's not true! They are very much welcome to. But make sure to stay on the bike lanes and don't get caught in the tram rails.
  • Loved Amsterdam when I visited there in the early 60's lots of fond memories. I visit there sometimes in the Photo Sites, there are over 1 million hits for Amsterdam on Flkr. Try this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/amsterdam/clusters/

  • I loved Amsterdam. B-coz my boyfrined and my future husband is live in Amsterdam Noor-Holland Netherland. The name is Niels Kwakman. I'm from Philippines I'm Mary Grace Legaspi Alfaro. I want visit in Amsterdam. I loved so much the country of Amsterdam.
  • I found people from Amsterdam are extremely cold toward english speakers. I don't know if its years of Americans and Brits visiting the city and acting like idiots, but I found the people very unfriendly. Eindhoven is nicer.
  • I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area and used to live in London. I would travel to Amsterdam frequently. I love the city and thought the people were great, even warm to english speakers...unlike Parisians (although they weren't too fond of my French!)
  • I live in this city. And apart from the drunk or drugged tourists (do you fucks also behave like that at home? I don't think so), I love it very much. As far as biking is concerned (I don't know who wrote those lines but they are very ignorant and beside the truth): if you a) know how to ride a bike, b) are not blind, and c) have a basic understanding of our traffic-rules, there is no problem what so ever! Second,I'm sorry, but did it ever occur to you english-speaking people that it is very rude to not even try to adres a person in his/her countries' language? Just because we (the Dutch) can speak english (more or less), that doesn't mean we all like to. A simple line can do wonders: 'Excuse me, do you speak english?'.Anybody who just starts blabbering to me in English, I do answer in Dutch - equally rude.
  • I visited Amsterdam in May 2009 and I had the greatest time there!!! (Thanks to Arnout!) • Some advise from a local :) The city center is cool to wander around in. Beware though, that most shops and restaurants are so called tourist traps: high prices, poor quality. Where should you go then? The Jordaan (near the Anne Frank house) has a lot of nice stores and restaurants. You can also visit a part of Amsterdam called 'de 9 straatjes' meaning the 9 streets. They're cross-streets of the canal. Want to indulge yourself in luxury? Than go to the PC hoofdstraat and the area around it. And for the daring tourist, remember: Never mix magic mushrooms with alcohol. You need to be at least 24 hours sober before taking them.
  • I've been to Amsterdam twice and I'm from the US. I found the people very friendly and helpful. If I could live there I would.
