  • I guarded the bridge during April 1954 with number 2 Platoon of No 1 Company, 4th Battalion Canadian Guards. The Bridge had been seriously damaged in an earlier attack, and all traffic had to progress slowly through the barriers one vehicle at a time. Vehicles had to swing from left to right to left etc., Several incidents occurred while I was present with my platoon. A jeep was stolen late one evening and crashed through some of the barriers before speeding south. It was later captured and the driver was charged with stealing our Brigadier's vehicle. Shots were fired one night and the local colonel's metal boat was sunk in mid stream. When I checked in daylight, the bow was sticking up out of the water and we recovered the boat. Other hair raising incidents occurred, but there were no serious injuries suffered by any of my men.
