BYC traces its roots to 1891 when the original Baltimore Yacht Club was formed in Baltimore City. Sue Island became its home with the incorporation of Baltimore Yacht Club, Inc. in 1939. At that time BYC was actually an island with access via an hourly ferry running from the mainland. Automobile access was accomplished in 1945 with a causeway linking Sue Island to the Holly Neck Peninsula of Baltimore County. The purpose of the club as stated in its Articles of Incorporation, is "...the promotion of boating to make the sport a safe, clean, healthful and economic means of recreation."
