house, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, 1820s construction, U.S. National Historic Landmark
The Rankin House is a National Historic Landmark and a station on the Underground Railroad, and sits on Liberty Hill overlooking Ripley, Ohio. The Rev. John Rankin and his family provided shelter and assistance to runaway slaves over many years, and the experiences of their "passengers" formed the basis for Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin." The historic Rankin House is now open for tours, and Liberty Hill overlooking the Ohio River is a wonderful place to visit, picnic, and contemplate our nation's history.
