In March 1995, Nucor Steel announced production of a third steel mill to produce hot-rolled and cold-rolled sheet steel in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The plant would be strategically positioned near the coast to better serve steel buyers in the Southeast, Atlantic coast and overseas through their own water port and through easy access to interstate highways and railroads.

Berkeley would also use the same thin-slab process that Indiana and Arkansas were using. Following its completion in 1997, this plant established Nucor as the second largest steel producer in the United States.

On April 22, 1997, Nucor announced plans to construct a second steel mill in Berkeley County, South Carolina. This new mill would produce wide-flange and bantam beams. The new mill began casting and rolling material in November 1998. Operations began that following year
