  • From what I could tell by zooming in on the so called elks lodge building? As fAR AS I COULD REMEMBER IT WAS NEVER NAMED BPOE! NOW IF I AM CORRECT THIS BUILDING IN ON THE CORNER OF MAIN ST. AND BICKNELL, OR NAVY? CAN'T REMEMBER ADDRESS IS 3400 MAIL OR 1300 MAIN ANYWAY i WAS RAISED IN THIS APARTMENT BUILDING THAT WAS NEVER KNOWN AS BPOE. I ALWAYS KNOWN IT AS THE carlton apartments and was from the basement to roof a apartment building. there was an parking lot just south next to it, not sure what is build there by looking, and north just across the street was the Orr House that was a bar since the 60's up until who knows last drink I had there was 1980, 81. I grew up in that area from 1959 to 1967 when we moved to Mar Vista.
  • This building was built in 1927 by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Santa Monica Lodge 906. To this day, big letters that say BPOE are on the side and front of the building in addition to being carved in stone over the front door. But the depression hit the Elks hard and by 1933 they could no longer afford the building. It was sold and converted into a 78 unit apartment building, called the Carlton Apartments. It is now a Landmarked property, well maintained at 3001 S. Main St, corner of Pier Ave. in the Ocean park district of Santa Monica.
