The new harbour was inaugurated in 2004. Paul do Mar was an important fishing centre. Typical fishing boats are still moored here and utilised keeping the Madeiran maritime traditions alive. So many fish were landed at the village that in 1912 a canning factory was established to export tuna. Today, there are still remnants of:
the chimney of the canning factory.
