El-Karnak, Luxor, Luxor Governorate, Egypt

The main and largest of the three temple precincts at Karnak, the sanctuary of Amun-Re contained the main temple of Amun-Re alongside a sacred lake and numerous other shrines and structures. The ancient Egyptian name for this was Opet-sut, perhaps meaning the "Most Select of Places." The present enclosure wall dates to the reign of Nektanebo I (380-362 BC).

Today the complex is a vast open-air museum and the largest ancient religious site in the world. It is probably the second most visited historical site in Egypt, second only to the Giza Pyramids near Cairo.
