321-foot, 25-story International-style office building completed in 1964. Designed by Emery Roth & Sons, it was formerly known as the Harcourt, Brace & World Building. It was renovated in 2009 by Moed de Armas & Shannon. The building is clad in a curtain wall of grey-brown steel and glass, above a ground floor of white stone, lined with metal-and-glass storefronts. The main entrance is in the center bay on the avenue, with glass doors and a small stainless-steel canopy, flanked by two storefronts on either side. Two projecting flagpoles are mounted above the entrance. The south facade on 47th Street has a further ten bays of storefronts, with a loading dock and service entrance at the east end.
There is a shallow setback at the east end above the 6th floor, another setback stretching further west above the 8th floor, and a shallow full-floor setback on both facades above the 11th floor. The larger setback above the 12th floor leads to the upper portion of the tower, which has a shallow setback at the east half of the south facade above the 17th floor, and a lower east roof line atop the 19th floor. The west section extends up to the main roof line. Both the lower, east portion, and the upper, west portion of the building have notched northeast corners.
The north facades are faced in brown concrete, with no windows on the upper, west portion (part of which juts to the north to attach to the taller neighboring building), and bands of windows on the lower, east portion. The window bands continue around the notched corner onto the east facade. The ground floor is occupied by a Pret-a-Manger restaurant, a Starbucks coffee, a CVS pharmacy, and Bread & Butter restaurant.
