Kottakyakam means 'Inside the fort'. The area which comes inside the 'fort walls' is collectively called Kottakyakam.
kotta refers to the fort which was built to protect the Shree Padmanabha swami temple . Kottakyakam was a highly guarded area during the rule of travancore kings . It mainly consisted of the shree padmanabha swami temple and "agraharas' where the bhramin priests lived. The present day kottakyakam remains to be a residential area majorily occupied by the brahmin agraharas. It also has a number of temples including ananthan kadu temple devoted to Lord Anantha ,after whose name is the city of Thiru anantha puri or THIRUVANANTHAPURAM is named.There are also many shopping centres , small and large outlets of various jewelleries etc inside kottakyakam. Another attraction is padmatheertham , the temple pond in front of Shree Anantha padmanabha swami temple and the Abhedashram by its side.
