  • This was origninally "Port Eaton" created by Nicholas Godfrey. Then Goodwin Gallagher took over, then Steers in 1925. Not a concrete factory, but a sand and gravel sifting plant to separate various grades of rock and sand.
  • Sand City used to be connected to the mainland, the Island was a sandbar. Sometime between the 1940's and the 1990's it became an Island. The cement shell of the plant remained on the island till about 2004 when it was demolished. Many kids hurt themselves exploring the remains before it was imploded. Now the island is just a lump of gravel.
  • I remember swimming over to the Island back in the 80's. Fun place to play around as a kid! Never got hurt though!
  • Cidade de areia, exatamente!
  • I grew up in Northport in the 1960s, the Bay was our playground. It was always an island as far back as I can remember. In junior high, friends and I sometimes camped out overnight in the concrete tunnels.
  • Almost broke my neck diving off the rope swing platform....was mid tide.....I think someone did at some point and that's why it was removed
  • my friends and used to hang out there when we were kids my friend Dave had a 17 ft Whaler we were there almost everyday in the summer spent alot of time jumping off Bulba Rock only at high tide . We did see a few people get hurt though some on the rope swing off the pier and some just falling off the beams leading to the rope that was the early 70,s sure miss those days
  • Mike Sand City was my second home as a teenager in the 60's. Working the midnight to 8 shift at Shelly Products in Huntington as a summer job and then driving to Sand City to spend the day swimming & skiing with friends. The sand city island and what was left of the structures always fascinated me. Back then you could almost walk across to it at low tide. The topography (both size and shape) of the strip of land across from the island has changed substantially in the past 50 years. It's a place filled with wonderful memories
  • i know the family whos son was paralyzed when he broke his neck at sand city island. it was a shame. i grew up in knowlwood beach and spend my childhood swimming and boating all around the area. i would live to return there today and revisit good times.
  • I grew up at the end of Knollwood Rd and made it to Sand City from time to time. Does anyone have any photos of the plant while it was in operation?
