Virpazar

Serbia and Montenegro / Montenegro / Podgorica /
 town, interesting place

Virpazar (Serbian Cyrillic: Вирпазар) is a village in the municipality of Bar, Montenegro.

Its name comes from the Serbian for "whirlpool" - there used to be one on the river; so, it's "a bazaar near a whirlpool".

This is rather a village, consisting of one square, a couple of dozens of houses, several restaurants; population is about 500. They live mainly on tourists.

In the square, there's a seasonal market where guests can find liquors, honey and souvenirs.
The first narrow-gauge railway in Montenegro (1908) connected Bar with Viprazar.

The town is very picturesque, and once (in the 18th-19th AD, during the rule of Peter I, Metropolitan of Montenegro) its bazar was the biggest in the country.

Now this is the major point from where Lake Skadar excursions start.
