PRR Thorndale Yard & Helper Base (Defunct)

USA / Pennsylvania / Thorndale /
abandoned / shut down, railroad yard

If you wanted to see Penn Central's junk back in the mid 1970s, this was the place to be. Actually very busy at one time with the Philadelphia & Thorndale low-grade freight bypass originating here and quite a bit of industry work in Coatesville and Downingtown. The tracks are mostly gone and AMTRAK uses it now for MOW cars since they tore out the yard tracks at Downingtown.

The yard served as a helper base back in the day and a number of steam locomotives were based here to assist freight trains on the high grades on the main line.
