Home of actress Rosemary Decamp in 1946

On July 7, 1946, when engine trouble developed, Hughes attempted to land his experimental XF-11 plane on the golf greens at the Los Angeles Country Club (10101 Wilshire Blvd.), but he didn't made it. Instead, he first bounced off the roofs of a home at 803 & Decamp's home at 805 N. Linden Drive before smashing into the home at 808 Whittier Drive, destroying the plane and burning down the house.

Rosemary DeCamp was probably best known for her role as James Cagney's mother in Yankee Doodle Dandy. Hughes' plane sliced through the bedroom where her and her husband, John Staler, were, and ripped across the couple's garage rooftop. Fortunately they both escaped injury.

  • Actually, this was the Zimmerman house that Hughes hit with the XF-11. The DeCamp home was next door to the northwest at 805 N. Linden Dr.
