Rajasekara Varman was a ruler of the chera dynasty,who is venerated as saviate-nayanar saint in south India.Saivite saint Cheraman Perumal Nayanar(AD-820-844),also known as Kazharitru arivaar Nayanar,one of the 63 Nayanars and a great friend of Sundaramoorthy Nayanar is said to have ruled,Kudamali Nadu, Kerala (the sanskritised version of Chera) with Kodungallur(Mahodayapuram-also known as Makothai) as his capital.The word chera is derived from the word cherai meaning declivity of a hill or mountain slope in classical Tamil . This is supported by the fact that chera kings are called Chera-alatan which means Lord of the slope in classical Tamil.The Chera Dynasty was a Tamil Dynasty that ruled South India untill 12th century CE.Nayanar(Tamil)means"ONE WHO SHOWS THE WAY".The 63 canonized tamil saints of south India,as documented in the "PERIYAPURANAM" BY SEKKILAR (ca 1140)This hill is at a distance of about 10km from the present Kodungallore town and approx.14 km from the Mahadeva temple Thiruvanchi kulam.It was during the period of the Cheraman perumal Nayanar the great saiva saint namely "SANKARACHARYA" who founded the "ADVAITA doctrine lived in Kerala.While visiting Mahodiyapuram in AD 844 the saint sundaramurthi nayanar Died. Unable to bear the greif of the death of this great saint,the Cheraman Perunal nayanar too met his death soon thereafter in the same year.He was followed by his son the King Sthanu Ravi alias Ravi Varma Kulasekaram(Ad 844-885) on the Chera Throne at Mahodayapuram.He had a daughter by the name Kilanadigal .
His reign was noted for the rise of Hindu shrines to a place of importance in religion and cultural life.The work of the nayanar led to the establishment of a number of saiva shrines in kerala.
